Evangelism 101

Must be Holy Spirit filled (Acts 1:8; Luke 24:49)

Must have compassion for souls (Matt 9:36; Jn 3:16)

Must be prayerful 1Thes 5:17; 2 Cor 10:4-5

Must study the word and know it. 1Pet 3:16

Must have practical and exemplary Christian life. Matt. 5:14-16,1Tim 4:12

Must keep secret and confidential information (Matt 17:9; Lev 19:16)

Must know how to love and value the soul (John 3:36; Mark 8:35-38)

Must know how to lead people to Christ through the sinner’s prayer Rom 10:9-10

Must have the right Posture

(A) Acknowledge That you are a sinner and repent. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Rom 3:23) “For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord” Rom 6:23

(B) Believe that Jesus died for you “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8)

(C) Confess Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness but with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” Rom 10:9-10

  1. Prayer : Start with Prayer before you go out or set off.

  2. Greetings: Greet everybody, be nice and smile.

  3. Introduce yourself and your team everybody by himself.

  4. The introduction format should be: NAME, CHURCH, PURPOSE AND PERMISSION

  5. Start the soul winning with a short prayer

  6. Introduce Christ as the Saviour of the world who came to die for his sins and ask whether he knows Jesus

  7. Introduce any of the formulae for the gospel and go on as you are lead by the Spirit

  8. Finish with a prayer

  9. Invite the soul to church by proposing he visits your church

  10. Inform the soul you will be praying for him, fix a date for next appointment

  11. Take details of the location, landmark etc for your report.

  1. Show him that he is a SINNER (Rom 3: 23, Rom 3: 10-12)

  2. Show him that the PENALTY of sin is DEATH (Rom 6:23) Explain Death as eternal separation from God. Thus you are eternally in HELL or in heaven.

  3. Show him that Christ DIED to PAY the penalty of our sin (John 3:16)

  4. Ask him to RECEIVE Christ as Saviour (John 1:12) This is how you become the child of God

Why Follow Up and Discipleship?

Evangelism was and is the topmost priority for Christ so we must follow in His steps (Mark 1:17, Matt 28:18-20, Acts 1:8

To make believers understand the Assurance of Salvation. They need to know that Christ now lives in them (2 Cor 5:17, 1Jn 5:13

To make the new converts grow (Col 1:13) delivered from the power of darkness and translated into his Son’s kingdom.

To lay a proper foundation for the future Christian life. Acts 2:41-42 “And they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine of fellowship….prayers

When difficult times come they are able to stand firm without wavering

Keys to Follow Up Success

Prayer: Prayer must be the focus of team members. They must pray before and after going out. This intercessory prayer is a must and without it you cannot succeed. (Pray for them to be genuinely born again, pray to destroy satanic strongholds in their lives, pray for the sick, etc)

Visitation: Teams must visit at the time convenient for the souls.

Personal Evangelism: Do personal evangelism to the converts and let them bring their families and friends

Counseling: Give Right Counsel from the Word of God and not your opinion. Be a good listener. Encourage the new convert to talk. Relax and show interest no matter how long it takes. If you don’t know the answer, promise to provide it at your next meeting. Don’t give wrong answers else you may mislead.

Feedback Reporting: There should be report submission by every team. The reports must have the names, progress and problems of the converts and the exercise.

We can combine person to person follow ups with group ones. Phil 2 19; Acts 15:36

Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner. I believe that You are the Son of God, and that You died on the cross for my sins. I invite you to come into my heart right now and be my Saviour. Wash away my sins and write my name in the book of life
